There are ... temples in the Angkor area. Outside of Angkor Wat there are a number that are definitely worth a visit. Any self respecting Tuk Tuk / taxi driver will be able to tailor the trip to your desires. Below is an overview of the ones we visited:
Angkor Wat Obviously a must visit, and top of everyone's list, as such, be prepared for crowds! Also, this is in the best condition of most, so if you're looking for ruins, then you'll offer some of the other temples. Make sure to choose your day wisely as the top floor is closed on certain days of the week for the monks.
Angkor Thom This temple is much smaller but possibly one of my favourites. It's characterised by hundreds of smiling faces. This is much quieter than Angkor Wat and has a good balance of ruins v detail.
Ta Prohm The 'tomb raider temple' as it is locally described. This was very busy and under a lot of restoration but great for seeing the jungle envelop the walls.
Banteay Kdei This is much smaller but also much less visited. There is a great gateway off the road and the temple has some fantastic architecture mixed into the vegetation.
